Upskilling and Reskilling: 3 tips of Preparing Employees for Future Roles

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and evolving business needs, upskilling and reskilling have become essential for preparing employees for future roles. These strategies enable organizations to equip their workforce with new competencies and adapt to shifting market demands, a key focus in human resource management (HRM) and Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) (Buchanan et al., 2020). Upskilling, the process of teaching employees advanced skills in their current roles, and reskilling, which focuses on training employees for entirely new roles, both address talent gaps and future-proof an organization’s workforce.



Aligning with HRM theories, upskilling and reskilling underscore the adaptability needed in today’s workforce. Research indicates that organizations investing in skills development experience greater employee satisfaction, enhanced productivity, and a decrease in turnover (Sung & Choi, 2014). For instance, companies like Amazon have implemented extensive upskilling initiatives, such as their “Career Choice” program, which funds employees to learn new skills for high-demand roles (Amazon, 2021). This approach aligns with best-fit HRM practices, adapting learning initiatives to meet the specific talent demands within an organization.

Reskilling initiatives also address the emerging need for agility in the workplace, particularly in roles affected by automation. A McKinsey study found that 87% of executives experience skill gaps within their workforce, highlighting the urgency for HR departments to implement targeted reskilling programs (McKinsey & Company, 2020). Organizations like IBM have embraced reskilling by offering employees access to online learning platforms and internal boot camps, helping them transition into data science and cloud computing roles (Weinberger, 2020).




However, current academic debates in HRM highlight a need for organizations to incorporate continuous learning as a core cultural element, ensuring employees view skills development as a lifelong process. Rather than one-time training programs, ongoing skill development contributes to a more dynamic and innovative workforce (Buchanan et al., 2020). The rise of hybrid learning models, blending in-person and online training, also allows organizations to cater to diverse learning preferences and foster an inclusive learning culture (Sung & Choi, 2014).
